The Skilled Sailor

I absolutely love this quote. It’s a small sentence but it can represent thousands and thousands of words. Sometimes we go through a lot in our lives and we wish that things didn’t have to happen. I remember when people used to always say, “Life is unfair.” As harsh as it sounds, it’s true. If you don’t go through anything, you’ll never learn anything. Yes, you can sit back and enjoy the view of life but you have no experience and you have nothing to teach people. I remember when I used to see failure as the end of everything. I look back and realise that, going through certain things has made me stronger and it’s made me wiser. I now know how to operate in certain situations. It’s like when you’re a toddler and you’re so fascinated by a flame. You don’t realise the pain that you’ll feel, until you touch it. Then, once you’ve felt the pain, you know to stay away from it. As individuals, we’ve all had our own experiences of failure and betrayal. It makes us who we are. We all have our own story to tell. We should embrace it, rather than become bitter. I don’t know about you, but if I was travelling on a ship, and I was told, “The sailor has only ever been trained on smooth seas,” I would panic a little.

Share your stories with people that need to hear it. Sometimes, people are going through similar things and they’re waiting for you to tell them about your voyage. I plan to tell my kids about all of my adventures. Good idea – rather than calling them trials, let’s call them adventures. I plan to tell them what I learnt from each one. Why pretend everything has been perfect? This is the beauty of life – it’s not perfect and we’re all rough around the edges.

A sailor that has only practiced on smooth seas, will be pathetic when the storm finally does come. And it will come. So, let’s do our best to take things on the chin and fight this fight of faith. Let’s believe that we will get through whatever life chucks at us. I’m not going to sit here and pretend I always take things on the chin. As a matter of fact, I’m finding life hard right now. But I know, that in the end, I will have a story to tell, and advice to pass on to other people.
